Qum silk pictorial signed: Qum Shirazi 300x195

An extremely fine and intricately detailed pure Ghom silk carpet of the highest quality. Traditionally depicting hunting scenes, this carpet is a prime example of a figural Ghom that due to it's rather unusually large size makes it a hard find on today's market. Most collectors look for figural Ghom silks and this particular piece is undoubtedly of a high investor's value as it features the most popular of all scenes, namely a hunting scene.

Refined modern day carpet industry

Located 150 km south of Tehran, the city of Ghom has a long and rich historical and cultural heritage. Carpet making is however a modern activity and since production began in the 1930's the city has rapidly grown to become one of the most famous carpet centres and home to some of the finest and most expensive carpets in the world. With no traditional designs of it's own, Ghom weavers have done a remarkable job of incorporating and even improving different designs from other Persian carpet styles. A wide and diverse array of different patterns and designs can be found, amongst which the most common feature medallions, floral patterns, birds, trees, ornamental vases, hunting scenes and other pictorial imagery in a beautiful array of colour combinations.

The magical use of silk

Like most Ghom figural hunting carpets, this particular piece fetches inspiration from stories of the Imperial court during the ancient Persian Empire. It depicts riders on their horses during a hunt as well as predatory animals and the animals that are being hunted to the smallest detail. The top part features a cypress tree and drinking hole, representative of heaven and life after death. The signature Ghom Shirazi has been emblematically woven into one side and due to the exclusive use of high quality silk the carpet lights up in an almost magical way bringing the figures to life.

The quality and construction of this masterpiece reflects great precision and can only be carried out by the most skilled and experienced of weavers. An impressive knot density of over one million knots beautifully depicts facial expressions and minute detailed imagery making this a prized collector's item.
